Sunset Therapy Insights
Illuminating Mental Wellness in West LA
Dr. Daniel Slavin, Psychotherapist
The way we connect for the last couple of years has changed drastically. During the pandemic, we were not allowed to be at our offices. We have worked for 25+ years with 30 other therapists. In one day, we all had to be out.
Almost all public meetings were canceled. Kids had to stay home with their parents and be home-schooled.
This put pressure on the whole world to change. Masks, sanitizer, and food are delivered to your front door, to name a few.
Zoom has become the most valuable way for us to speak to each other.
Overnight, we all had to shift to digital communication for friends, family, work, doctor appointments, and more. Travel came to a standstill.
Zoom fatigue, not being able to visit friends or family in the hospitals. Even funerals had to be on Zoom. The most important thing people needed was to see friends and family, which became impossible. Social distancing, Mental health professionals became overwhelmed.
We need to reevaluate our priorities and spend quality time with loved ones. We want to be close to family if possible. All of a sudden, being far from family and friends seemed terrible. Good relationships became gold, and toxic ones fell apart.
Weddings, birthdays, holidays, births, and deaths are all done remotely.
In general, the pandemic reshaped how we connect.
Adaptability to a new and different world became a standard.
Toxic relationships fell apart.
Rather than panicking, understanding the feelings and why many people had at least a low level of worry and depression allowed mental health professionals to become first responders to help people get a plan and reframe the changes to be less frightening.
